As a property owner in the municipality, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have all the required permits prior to the start of your renovation or addition. A building permit is a license that gives you legal permission to start construction knowing that the issued drawings comply with the appropriate governmental rules and regulations such as the Ontario Building Code.
When is Building Permit Required?
Under the Building Code Act, a building permit is required for the construction and/or demolition of a building/structure over ten square meters, an addition, or structural alteration of any building or structure. Buildings/structures under ten square meters are still required to comply to the Zoning By-law.
